Derbyshire Highways major repairs and maintenance to Harrington Bridge, Sawley starting Tuesday 4 August 2026

You may already have seen press releases reporting that Derbyshire Highways will be carrying out major repairs and maintenance to Harrington Bridge, Sawley, starting today.

About the repairs
The works will take place from Monday, 3 August 2026 until Friday, 27 November 2026.

During the works, the B6540 Tamworth Road will remain open to vehicles except for some temporary lane closures and three overnight weekend closures. The road will remain open to pedestrians throughout the works.

Full details about the repair programme are available on One Network: https://one.network/?GB150970332

Temporary lane closures
For five weeks, starting from Monday, 12 October until Friday, 13 November 2026, temporary two-way traffic lights will be in operation 24/7.  During peak hours these will be controlled manually to minimise delays, Monday to Saturday.

Overnight closures
In addition, the following overnight closures – from 8pm until 9am – are required to replace the bridge expansion joints and resurface the pavement across the bridge:

  • Saturday 24 October / Sunday 25 October
  • Saturday 7 November / Sunday 8 November
  • Saturday 14 November / Sunday 15 November.

During the overnight closures, a signed diversion route will be in place using Tamworth Road, Wilne Road, Sawley Road, A6005, A5111, A6, A50 roundabout Junction 1, and B6540.

Please be aware that the dates listed above may change due to weather conditions and any unexpected issues we find on site.

Public transport

The temporary road closure will affect public bus services Number 15 and Skylink Nottingham provided by Trentbarton, and the Number 7 Soar Valley Community Bus.

A signed diversionary route is also in place using Tamworth Road, Wilne Road, Sawley Road, A6005, A5111, A6, A50 roundabout Junction 1, and B6540.

About the works

The repairs are the final phase of a major £1.4 million project to refurbish the 120-year-old bridge.

In 2023, the steel structure of the bridge was repainted and corroded steel replaced to safeguard the future of the structure.

Our contractor will be replacing and repairing corroded steel supports, repairing the road expansion joints as well as resurfacing the road and pavements.
